Education Disparities Article by Dr. Amoy Hugh-Pennie Published in “Behavior Analysis in Practice"

Dr. Hugh-Pennie co-authored “Cultural Relevant Pedagogy and Applied Behavior Analysis: Addressing Educational Disparities in PK-12 Schools”

A journal article by Breakthrough Behavior Regional Director of Clinical Services Dr. Amoy Hugh-Pennie has been published by “Behavior Analysis in Practice,” a quarterly peer-reviewed publication that provides science-based, best-practice information on behavior analysis.

“Cultural Relevant Pedagogy and Applied Behavior Analysis: Addressing Educational Disparities in PK-12 Schools” suggests that CRP and ABA, when used together, may strengthen educators’ efforts to reduce the effects of racism that some students of color experience. CRP is an educational framework that asserts that successful teachers of African American students help their students gain socio-political awareness, cultural competence and academic excellence.

“I am very proud of this initiative,” said Dr. Hugh-Pennie. “As part of a special edition of the journal addressing racism, my mission was to highlight more than 60 years of positive contributions by behavior analysts to instructional design, teaching tactics and strategies that align with culturally humble practices toward improving outcomes for historically marginalized learners.”

Dr. Hugh-Pennie coauthored the study with Mya Hernandez, Margaret Uwayo, Gaige Johnson and Denise Ross.
